The CHROMA LIFE PROJECT, developed by a researcher at Keio University Graduate School of Media Design SAMCARA lab, received the Grand Prize at HENAI competition.

CHROMA LIFE PROJECT is an effort to apply biodesign to letterpress printing from the perspective of circular design, and to explore the possibilities of sustainable and innovative printing technology. We developed a bioink derived from bacteria, which is biodegradable and has vivid coloring, while also enabling dynamic design expressions in which the color and texture change with changes in light and humidity. In addition, we are using this bioink to plan workshops to promote social interaction, develop products that utilize the growth characteristics of bacteria, and develop new media expressions with the theme of building an ecosystem. We aimed to establish a new printing method that combines tradition and innovation while respecting the artisanal skills and historical background of letterpress printing. This project aims to redefine the value of letterpress printing through a reevaluation of printing technology and contribute to brand building for a sustainable future. By overlaying the activities of life on the traditional technique of letterpress printing, we create new expression and value of circulation, and go beyond the framework of mere printing to depict the future of media that coexists with people, the environment, and time.
